There
was a time when being listed in Yahoo! really meant something. Now it means
"pay for traffic" and depending where their editors place your website, you
may or may not reap the benefits of being listed. If you are willing to pay
to be listed you should know that it is an annual fee you'll be paying with
no guarantee of visitors or that your website will even be listed. Be
prepared to trade emails with the unknown editors should your site be placed
in, what you think, is an improper category. Price for submission (does not
guarantee acceptance) starts at US$299.00 per year depending on website
type.
Be sure your website is
"visitor ready" and that you've selected the optimal category for your
website. No broken links, popup windows, "coming soon" notices and such. |

Google
is the most post popular search engine in the world. Getting listed here
should be a prime goal of your submission plans. Start by searching the
topics that your site has the most relevance and trade links with those
sites. There is a manual site submission page but you'll find that for
regular spidering of your website you'll need to have inbound links from
other relevant websites first.
Trade links with popular
relevant sites and you'll be listed and well-ranked. |

MSN
search, owned by Microsoft, is the up and comer to Google's search
domination. More and more traffic for your web site will be dependent on
your website being indexed and optimized for the MSN spider. Free submission
is available to MSN but your site is best indexed as it is crawled from
another indexed web site. Watch for new advertising options to be unveiled.
Optimization is specific for MSN Search which will force you to create
specific pages for the MSN Search results.
Free
submission of your home page works just as well as letting the MSN
spider find and crawl your web site. |

 The
DMOZ Open Directory Project is a free resource to list your website. Maintained
by volunteers, results are posted in countless websites besides at dmoz.com
(and other variations) and can drive traffic to your website. Because the
editors are volunteers your submission could take a while to be added to the
directory. As long as you have followed the submission policy to the letter,
you should be listed within 2 months. Free to submit and be listed but
you'll pay in sweat waiting to see if you pass final muster. Browse the ODP
to find the best category to submit your website in before you submit. Many
people choose a "close second" category and do not get listed. If you find a
category that you'd like to be an editor of submissions in, follow the link
provided on the page. The ODP is also used by the
Google Directory.
Although the website listings are different, Google uses their PageRank
system to determine position of websites in the directory, the sites that
are listed and ranked have first been approved by the OPD editors.
Do not
submit more than 1 page from your website (home page) unless you have
substantially varying subject matter. Allow a minimum of 4 months before
resubmitting your website if not listed (think redesign). |

to visitors that is gaining wide acceptance. It's important to have your
site listed and manual submission, at this point in time, is effective.
Pay-per-click results are offered through the Yahoo! Submission service
(formerly Overture).
New, fast growing search
engine. Submit your site manually. |

Zeal.com (part of the Looksmart Search Family) is a member/editor system of
providing website descriptions and editorials in their directory. Free to
join, you need to pass the contributor quiz before you can submit websites
(become a 'Zealot') and start promoting your own. The websites that you
submit are tracked for quality and comments by the users of the Zeal.com
directory. Keep in mind that the sites you submit are approved or
disapproved for inclusion by someone else. Don't be too shy in filling out
your personal profile page but watch how you describe the sites you submit.
You should also know that personal, content driven websites will be listed,
as long as they are family orientated. Commercial sites or sites that sell a
lot of stuff (or are directed to adult audiences) probably won't make it in
and you'll be referred to the Looksmart paid inclusion business to have your
website made available in places that serve Looksmart search results, but
still not be found at Zeal.com.
Members submit websites. It isn't a fast process but at least it's free to
promote your site in a well used directory. This is a family oriented search
directory. Easy to get content websites listed, near impossible for
commercial sites. |

Vivante
touts itself as "Search your way". What you'll find is a targeted drill-down
search engine that has specific areas of search, popular search terms
populate head sections of the Vivante site to encourage use of the
drill-down method of search. You can get used to using this search system,
but it'll take a while. We believe that it will also take a while for
general surfers adoption to, so paying for a listing, even at the current
bargain basement prices, may not be for you unless you have a 'cover all
bases' search engine marketing strategy. You can get your site listed for
free, so start there, become an Adjunction member to have a paid listing. Be sure to use proper
category selections and have your website optimized for spidering.
Free listing via spidering and paid submission
Adjunction may
round out your SE strategy. If this search method takes off you'll get lot's
of traffic, if it doesn't at least the risk is minimal. |

Bluefind
is a hand-edited directory that has great growth potential for providing
traffic. Current results are limited by the number of entries per category,
so the directory is someone unweighted for results. There is a one-time fee
required for submitting your website or web page, if your page has
distinctive content enough to earn a listing of it's own. Bluefind uses the
'drill-down' method of web site submission. We do not like the advertising
that is found on the top fold of every page, it should be less intrusive,
unless you are one of the advertisers, since the ads run across the Bluefind
site.
To get listed without paying
a fee a submission director will 'find' your website then list it. To really
get listed pay a one-time submission fee. |

Teoma
uses Subject-Specific Popularity. Subject-Specific Popularity ranks a site
based on the number of same-subject pages that reference it, not just
general popularity. In a test performed by respected industry publication
Search Engine Watch, Teoma's relevance grade was raised to an "A" following
the integration of Teoma 2.0. In addition to utilizing existing search
techniques, Teoma applies authority, a new measure of relevance, to deliver
authoritative search results. To determine the level of authority associated
with a particular site, Teoma employs three proprietary techniques: Refine,
Results and Resources.
There is no site submission
to get listed. The Teoma spider follows links and you'll get listed when
your site is highly relevant in it's subject/topic. Search for sites that
are listed and trade links. |

Amfibi
is a smart search engine and is not necessary that you submit each
individual page. From your homepage, Amfibi crawls automatically the content
of all pages of your website. For better results you can use the META Tags
in your HTML pages with the title, description, keywords and language.
Amfibi recognize this META Tags and show the results with title and
description of your pages.
Easy site submission. Traffic
is low but results aren't topped out yet. Once Ambifi gains ground it'll be
worthwhile to be listed. |
